Personal Description:
I am a freelance viola and violin player based in Birmingham and I enjoy combining teaching with playing. I currently work at two private schools (two days a week) delivering one to one violin/viola/piano lessons and conducting ensembles (string orchestra). I also enjoying teaching at home, which is an area that I am looking to expand. In addition I help to co-run my string quartet and we play at lots of weddings and events across the Midlands.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching for 15 years now, working in a variety of settings and locations. I decided to undertake my Suzuki Teacher Training qualification (I learnt this method as a child, so it seemed a natural choice) and then later on the PGCE, which gave me a wealth of knowledge and confidence, whilst honing my teaching skills. I have had the pleasure of teaching people at all levels of playing, right from beginner through to Grade 8 and beyond, helping them to build the necessary skills and knowledge to move onto the next stages of learning.
Tutoring Approach:
At home I can afford to teach in a slightly more relaxed manner, which I really enjoy. Whatever the setting, I like fun, lively lessons with plenty of humour in order to balance out the fine, focused work needed to master an instrument. My Suzuki influence means that I enjoy the support of parents/carers in the lesson and I like them to be involved in the learning process. I have recently taken on a few adult pupils and I am loving the different type of interaction that these lessons bring. I want people to enjoy learning an instrument whatever their desired outcome is and I am happy to support them through all the necessary formal qualifications, or just help them to improve their skills purely for recreation.

Antonia quickly identifies my strengths and weaknesses. Which i find really encouraging! This is especially helpful when im playing my violin in duet with her piano. If there is a phrase or rhythm that could be played finer, she will play it on her violin and then break it down note by note and share the method for me to practice back at home.
It is easy for me to become too self critical with my violin play, but Antonia throws self doubt out of the window and replaces it with a kind and thorough outlook on the music and the result is im progressing; and i'm enjoying my practice again!
As mentioned, I am now overseas for about three weeks so this will set me back a bit. I plan to use the first week back brushing up the basics again and then perhaps we can organise another few sessions.
