Personal Description:

I am a teacher of violin and viola in Tangmere, near Chichester. I play professionally and trained at Trinity College of Music and at the Royal College of Music. I have many years of orchestral and chamber music experience (having been based in London for 17 years) as well as of playing in a diverse range of genres, including folk and pop. I have also done extensive education and outreach work, including projects with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra. I have recorded with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Tango Siempre, Bastille and Take That, among others. I currently play viola with the Titanium and Accordi String Quartets and in a folk duo, on violin, with dobro, along with professional freelance playing, mainly around the Southeast.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching the violin and viola since 2003. I have qualified teacher status (QTS), having taught classroom music up to A-level in two high-achieving London state schools. I have several years' experience of upper strings teaching to adults with the East London Late Starters Orchestra. I currently teach students of age 4 to adult, both privately and in schools in and around Chichester.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to provide a friendly and safe space to learn, encouraging a healthy approach to 'mistakes' (or re-framing the concept of mistakes!). I have a positive approach and encourage self-reliance and challenge at an appropria**Contact Detail Removed**vel for each student. I pace lessons and progress according to the pupil. I ask a lot of questions as I believe in the socratic method of learning. Secondary music teaching has given me a good basis in the psychology of learning, and I have recently (January 2020) completed a 30-week course in counselling skills, which further supports my one-to-one teaching. I really enjoy it when my students are enthusiastic and ask me questions or are keen to show me what they've learned!
