Personal Description:
Alan has an honours degree in music from the University of Sheffield and is available to teach all brass and percussion instruments: trumpet, cornet, flugel horn, tenor horn, french horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone, tuba, Eb or Bb Bass, timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, marimba, drum kit, snare drum, bass drum etc
He has several original pieces and many arrangements published, has played brass and percussion at the highest level, as well as conducting. He is a member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors, and was Musical Director of Royal Wootton Bassett Orchestra and is currently conductor of The Film Orchestra Gloucestershire, and The Film Orchestra Wiltshire. As a recording engineer and editor he has produced several CDs of Brass Band music.
He has adjudicated competitions, mainly for children and youth bands, as well as solo, duet and quartet competitions.
Tutoring Experience:
Many pupils, both previously and currently, in brass and percussion as well as theory. Was director of brass and percussion for a local Youth Band, has been Musical Director of a youth band in Oxfordshire, and professional Musical Director of Gillingham Imperial Silver Band, in Gillingham, Dorset. Coached a candidate for BBC Young Musician of the Year beyond Grade 8 in Clarinet.
Tutoring Approach:
One to one tuition, tailored specifically to the pupil. Weekly lessons review the progress since the previous lesson, and introduce new techniques for rehearsal prior to the next lesson. Pupils are encouraged to use lesson time for rehearsal advice on specific pieces for performance - whether solo or band/orchestral. Progress can be as fast or as slow as the pupil is capable of. No emphasis on Grade examinations, although these can be significant indicators of progress.
