Who'd have thought that the small and humble ukulele could become so hugely popular?

In the last couple of years, the ukulele has shot to fame as the instrument of choice for adults and children alike. You'll be familiar with this tiny yet wonderful instrument without even knowing it - if you've heard Hawaiian music, or the hit songs of singer songwriter Jack Johnson, then you've heard the ukulele.

The uke, as it's commonly and affectionately known amongst its fan, is like a mini guitar. It has four strings which can be played individually or together as chords. It's a wonderful instrument to learn, especially if you've never played an instrument before - it's quite easy to pick up and beginners often leave their first lesson being able to play a whole tune all the way through.

Bands like the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain have also helped to make this instrument popular, showing that it can make a beautiful, enjoyable sound despite its small stature. Impressively, it's an instrument that could raise your happiness levels as well: author Tom Hodgkinson, in his book "How to be Free" recommends that readers learn to play the ukulele in order to beat the blues of modern life.

If you're part of a family, then why not take ukulele lessons all together? It's a great instrument for adults and children of all ages. To find your nearest ukulele teacher, simply browse run a search on First Tutors: Music.
