Personal Description:
I am a qualified secondary Mandarin teacher with QTS and PGCE in secondary Mandarin teaching in a UK school; Bachelor in Education (Honours).
I specialise in helping students to prepare for Mandarin GCSE, IGCSE, A level, International A level , IB and HSK exams.
Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching Mandarin from KS2 to the sixth form for more than fifteen years. I also teach adult Mandarin learning courses to help people to pursue their career development for many years. Helping students enjoy and excel in Mandarin learning is what I am aiming for.
I specialise in helping students to prepare for Mandarin GCSE, IGCSE, A level, International A level and HSK exams. I am a dedicated and well resourced teacher with varied teaching strategies and flexibility.
Teaching Approach:
My pedagogical approach is based on the science of memory and how students learn.
For example: the use of scaffolding planning and questioning skills which aim for differentiation have been adapted into my teaching over time.
In teaching Mandarin, I believe that building up confidence, creating a good learning habit and encouraging discoveries of learning is crucial for Mandarin learning.
Therefore, building confidence and promoting clarity, accuracy and proficiency are important. I am keen to work with my students to help and stretch their knowledge so that they can reach their language targets in a timely manner.

XiaoyuFrom Kate (5/5): Sophie is a very kind and patient teacher. She uses a spacial repetitive approach to her lessons which helps consolidate all prior learning. She has been my tutor for the past two years and I have made great progress, which is testament to her teaching talent. I am still engaged and eager to learn and it's all thanks to her! I often find it difficult to commit and attain consistency in my life, however Sophie greatly facilitates this. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone!
From Ethan (/5): As an adult beginner learning a new language can be especially difficult. I highly recommend Sophie as a tutor! I have learnt so much under her tuition and she makes learning Chinese very enjoyable. Alongside the workbook we are going through, she takes time to tailor the lesson to my individual wants/needs through additional vocabulary I am interested in learning, corrects errors in a helpful ways and sends over extra material that are more suited to everyday language. From Mariann A (/5): I had Sophie as my tutor for 2 years. Sophie laoshi is very experienced. She is very helpful and has a lot of resources to make learning effective. I liked how she was very aware on what i had to do e.g we focused on speaking a month before the speaking exam as it was the first exam. I have been learning Mandarin for a while but only really progressed when I took her up as my tutor. I am now able to write a 150 word essays in Mandarin. She is nice and very serious about your learning, thus you learn a lot. With her help, I got an A* in CIE IGCSE mandarin as a foreign language!
From Bridget (/5): My 17-year old is extremely pleased with Xiaoyu as a Chinese tutor. Xiaoyu really understands the A-Level syllabus and is proactive about targeting areas that my daughter needs practice with. She's also very responsive to emails and communicates regularly with my daughter between lessons. We've had several lessons already and each time my daughter feels she's making clear progress. The Chinese A-Level exam is a jump up from GCSE-level Mandarin and, thus, studying for it is unexpectedly demanding unless you are a truly native speaker. However, Xiaoyu is a great tutor for those students who are up for the challenge. Highly recommend!

I am happy with the progress I am making, which is much better than I have in the past on my own. She is very patient with me and her lessons are fun and tailored to my needs.

She struggled with the replacement teacher and lost confidence in her ability even though mandarin to her was a difficult subject to grasp. I found Xiaoyu online and she was a perfect match! She worked with my daughter, truly gave it her all. Mandarin exam this year’s GSCE exam was particularly difficult and my daughter that was predicted a Low grade made an A! . Xiaoyu taught her to be confident and she teaching technique and warm approach boosted my daughters confidence. Great teacher!
From Mikael (/5): My goal was to be able to read and write Chinese for daily use with the potential of it expanding its use into the workforce. Starting at HSK1, I worked my way up to HSK4 under Xiaoyu's guidance.
Although you have to work hard to really let the language sink-in (as with any languages), Xiaoyu made each of the lessons manageable and fun (she's also very accommodating to your time schedule) so that it did not become overwhelming or a chore. If you're considering taking the HSK exam, she will tell you honestly which level she feels you are capable of. I managed to achieve 88% in the exam which I feel is a testament to her teaching methods considering I started not being able to read and write at all.
I now use Chinese in my daily life with friends and can converse quite confidently through most topics. Highly recommend this teacher if you have a clear end goal in mind.

She makes sure that you fully comprehend the current lesson before continuing onto the next chapter. My daughter has been going to Sophie on a weekly basis since Sept 18.
