Personal Description:

Hi, I’m Susie. Languages are my absolute passion in life! Whoever you are, YOU CAN learn a language. My students range from age 11 to 72, from introvert to extrovert, beginner to advanced. It doesn’t even matter where you are in the world - I have students as far away as Australia, thanks to my online tuition through Skype and Zoom.

I’m a full-time tutor with over six years and 10,000+ hours of teaching experience. Most of my experience is on a one-to-one basis, as well as working with couples or small groups. My largest group was teaching English on a building site to over 20 Polish builders! Together we’ll build your skills and your confidence and banish the horrendous memories of school language learning; it can be fun, I promise. Let’s discover your true potential.

I have previously worked with an independent, online school to deliver individual tuition and group classes for both beginner and iGCSE level, as well as with a selection of private, online clients from around the UK, Europe and beyond. Online software such as Skype and Zoom enable conversation, messaging, file sharing, screen sharing, as well as live video and audio and for many people are more convenient and just as effective as face-to-face sessions. If you’re a technophobe, don’t worry, before I became a teacher, I was a retail manager for a large telecommunications company, so I can normally help with most technical issues too.

As a former student of the Open University, I fully understand the challenges of studying solo and of juggling work, study and personal life. I like to think that I’m like a personal trainer for languages; I will be your guide, show you how to achieve great results, but I won’t do the work for you. You get out what you put in; being able to set aside time to study or incorporate your learning into your daily life will be just as important as your lessons. If you can find a friend or family member to come along for the ride, I charge just £5 extra per hour for each person you wish to add to your lesson.

Some people may consider that my hourly rate is quite high; so why pay the extra? I’m a full-time tutor; this is what I do every day of the week, not just after my day job. This means you get my full attention, a huge range of resources which are available for use during lessons, great flexibility for lessons days & times, reliability, not to mention a range of online study materials which can be used on computers, tablets and mobile devices. I am also currently in the process of developing Instagram and YouTube video content so that you can continue to learn with me at home, when your lesson is over.

Subjects taught:

- French & Spanish: KS3, GCSE, iGCSE, A-level (Spanish only) and adult tuition (beginner & intermediate).
- English as a Second Language (ESL/ ESOL students): All levels, including preparation for the following exams: Cambridge FCE, CAE, PET, IELTS General Training and Academic, PTE academic and ESOL access exams levels 1-3.
- CV clinic and dissertation guidance.

*New for 2020* Italian: I am very excited to be adding beginner Italian to my portfolio! I have a competent level of Italian, including a strong understanding of the grammar, which I use with my Italian friends and when travelling in Italy. If you are looking for beginner Italian for personal interest, conversation, casual use and travel, I can definitely help. I do not have any official qualifications in Italian, however my background in romance languages (Italian is a Latin-based language which, broadly speaking, I find to have a very similar vocabulary to Spanish with the grammar of French!) and my methodical nature means I would ensure that every lesson is thoroughly planned and carefully checked; I would never teach you anything I am unsure of, as this can be greatly detrimental. I am not available to help with exam preparation for Italian or to teach more advanced levels. My lack of qualifications in this subject and the fact that I am not fluent are the reasons that Italian lessons are offered at £10 less per hour than my other subjects. I firmly believe that the quality of the beginner lessons that I provide in Italian is the same as for French or Spanish.

Each of my lessons is designed with the individual in mind, tailored to their learning preferences. Whilst I will do my utmost to give the student all the tools necessary to succeed and to cover as much as possible from the syllabus, I do not make promises on the grades that will be achieved or GCSEs or any other exam, as this ultimately relies on the student’s self-study, revision and performance on the day. I do however pride myself on keeping students/ parents/ guardians informed on their progress, using the past papers as indicators of current level. This enables parents/ guardians to make informed choices about the amount of study necessary and provides the best support for the learner. I am always available should parents/ guardians have any questions or concerns.
