Personal Description:
I have worked as an au pair in France over 2 months in which I took care of 4 children. During this time, I helped the kids improve their English by talking with them, playing games, and also learning from them along the way. I was immersed in the French culture and having to speak and receive instructions in French from adult members of the family and this improved both my own French and my comprehension of the language.
I opted to study French for a year at university level, and still keep it up for enjoyment in my spare time. During my time at high school, I was asked to help out at a local primary school where I worked with a group of 8 primary 5 pupils to help them with their French. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, as they did too, and would constantly come up with different activities to help them each week.
Teaching Experience:
In high school, I tutored 8 primary five pupils once a week. I taught them the basics of French i.e. colours, numbers, and greetings. By the end of a month, they had started incorporating this language into conversation, and were even asking for more time at the end of our sessions, showing that they clearly enjoyed it.
I would try to speak as much French as I could to a level where they could understand, and found that this was taken well, with most of the pupils firstly translating what I was saying into English and then trying to respond back in French.
Teaching Approach:
Teaching should be interactive, not a series of dull, repetitive verb tables and vocabulary tests. Languages are fun, and for me, the best way to learn is to incorporate language into something you enjoy, like playing a game, matching French and English words, or incorporating pictures to help them. Many pupils do have the ability to learn French well, but it can seem overwhelming.
Praising their effort has always been my methodology, and supporting them through an answer, without giving it to them straight away. Most of the time, the answer is in their head, but they need some help finding it.
