Personal Description:

Post 24 years' business experience in blue-chip companies across several functions and sectors, from management consultancy to investment banking, in 2016 I left the 'City of London' to focus on teaching languages, my life-long passion!

I have a first class degree in French and Spanish, a post-graduate degree in Marketing, am CELTA-qualified to teach English to speakers of other languages (TEFL) and I am experienced in teaching 1-to-1 or groups in private, business or school settings.

I am DBS (formerly CRB)-checked to teach children and can offer individual or small group classes either in my study at home in south west London, at your home or in a public place, such as a coffee shop in either:
(1) Spanish (adult beginner or secondary school Key Stage 3 - Years 7-9 -); or
(2) TEFL, business, IELTS or general (adults or children).

I use my teaching skills on a daily basis at a secondary school. In particular I lead the EAL function, which coaches pupils who speak a language other than English at home, but I also work as a class mentor and Language Tutor to Key Stage 3 Spanish learners. In addition, on occasion I have enjoyed being a 'host mum' to TEFL students from two local private language schools. It is truly rewarding to watch students gain in confidence as they improve, whatever the language!

Teaching Experience:

TEFL:
I have more than three years' TEFL experience (general, exam and business English) in Spain, Germany and the UK, teaching adults and both young and older teenagers from many different nationalities, including Swedish, Ukrainian and South Korean. In addition, these 'summer holidays' I am looking forward to returning for a second year running to work full time at the British Council's most highly-rated private language school in the UK (a pre-reference is available), where I will teach English to multinational groups of up to 16 students. In terms of levels, I have taught all of beginner, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced.

I find my extensive knowledge of French and Spanish invaluable in predicting, identifying and mitigating likely errors when teaching learners whose Language 1 is a Romance language. I also draw on my extensive commercial experience when teaching business English and English for IELTS.

Spanish:
In 2017. I was approached to work part time as a Language Tutor to Key Stage 3 pupils learning Spanish at a secondary school. I assist and encourage learners of mixed abilities to reach their potential. One pupil was due to take her GCSE early, so I tutored her in her writing skills.

Teaching Approach:

Every learner is different, has their own experience, aptitudes, interests, motivations and timescales. My current secondary school roles of class mentor and Language Tutor have taught me to embrace variety with patience and sensitivity. I put considerable effort into researching and creating individually-customised sessions which ensure progression towards a pre-defined, agreed goal, whether that be for pleasure, business or exam success.

I take pride in building a good rapport with all my students. We work hard together in partnership to build their skills and confidence and I am genuinely delighted for them when our mutual commitment brings them success. My approach and attention to detail have meant that all my adult tutees have remained with me for many months (or until they had to return to their home countries) - please see reviews -.

I have a good repository of quality resources which address the four core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. I include classes on 'British culture' for TEFL learners. Lastly, in terms of Spanish, I am particularly familiar with the 'Viva' course books, 1, 2 and 3 which are used extensively at KS3.
