Personal Description:
I am a 23-year-old graduate from Oxford Brookes University where I studied Japanese Studies and English Literature. I have also spent a year abroad studying at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo where I was able to put my language skills to use as well as gain experience of how Japanese is used in daily life I have always enjoyed the Asian language and culture as I grew up in Hong Kong and have had exposure to multiple cultures. Teaching has turned into a passion for me over the past year but I have had trouble gaining new students which is why I am applying for a position here.
My hobbies include reading, playing guitar and playing games both in Japanese and English. In my spare time I domestically take care of my family and translate Japanese manga for online scanlation groups.
Teaching Experience:
During my last year of university, I took a course on teaching a foreign language which has given me many tools to put to use as a teacher. For the past six months, I have taught one student from beginner Japanese to the level he is at now. I advertised myself on local social media groups as well as putting up flyers in my local and nearby villages. It started as me commuting to my student's house but, since quarantine, I have transitioned to online classes which have gone very well through programs such as Zoom, Skype and Discord.
Teaching Approach:
My approach to teaching is to first figure out what type of learner the student is. For example, do they retain information better visually or auditory? I also find out whether they respond better to criticism or positive encouragement and I adjust my teaching method accordingly. I also like to make my lessons as engaging as possible. For example, after introducing a grammar point, I would give them some exercises to practice using it and then possibly move onto a game to help them remember it in an engaging way. I also like to make sure that what I am teaching has 'real-world' applications so that if they were to talk to a Japanese person, they would sound native as opposed to sound like they only learned from a textbook.
