Personal Description:
I graduated with a Japanese degree in 2013 from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London, where I also studied Chinese. After graduating, I attained HSK3 (the language admission qualification for Chinese universities), and was awarded a full scholarship by the Confucius Institute to study at Northwest Normal University in Lanzhou, China.
I have both worked and studied in both China and Japan for extended periods. I have worked in Okinawa for a hotel (2011), Shanghai for a marketing-communications company (2013) and Yokohama for a consultancy (2019-2020).
Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching Japanese as a private tutor since 2016, including to lawyers, business people and casual adult learners.
Teaching Approach:
I would normally broadly follow the path of standard adult textbooks. However, I do strongly believe grammar needs to be learnt in context, so I will teach grammar slightly more holistically to show how the language 'fits together'. This style would particularly benefit a motivated complete beginner or elementary adult student looking to progress quickly. However, for those wishing to sit language exams, I can also tutor towards the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT5, JLPT4 and JLPT3) and Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK1, HSK2 and HSK3), but unfortunately do not teach the school curriculum (GCSE, AS/A-Level, IB, etc.).
