Personal Description:
I am an expert tutor in French, Spanish and Italian and I give excellent advice on which of these languages to learn if it has to be a choice. My ability to cut down rote learning is second to none.
I have a BA Honours Degree from Queen Mary University of London (2001) for French and Maths with Spanish.
Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring for over 20 years helping the pupil to understand the language and its structures much better.
Teaching Approach:
I teach the verbs and tenses as well as good vocabulary and expressions, because without a verb you cannot have a sentence, then one is extremely limited in what they can say. I also give great tips for Writing and Speaking.
Don't worry, it is all very logical and even for those irregular verbs I have discovered a lot of patterns that many others do not teach.

MatthewFrom Priscille (3/5): Matthew had one lesson with my daughter who is currently taking her French A level. Matthew has good technical grammar but our preference was for a fluent French speaker as my daughter has french as her mother tongue.

(a) I have it in writing from you that you wanted someone who has taught A Level French before and the level of fluency was never even discussed being a grammar and essay writing tutoring job that you requested
(b) My level of French fluency is more than enough to teach French A Level so only other things could be relevant.
(c) Good technical grammar implies the student doesn't necessarily need to know it when nothing could be further from the truth if they want to get a good grade in real terms. It was your request and rightly so for me to work on the grammar because it turned out to be a huge problem not allowing any time in the first lesson to do conversational French and it would have had too many mistakes, so very much a case of learning to walk before you run.

From Julie (/5): I only had one italian lesson with Matthew and he was absolutely straight from the outset in confirming that he is not fluent in the language. As I wanted to improve my grammar, I went ahead anyway and actually quite enjoyed the lesson. Matthew came quite prepared and asked a lot of questions to ascertain my level. He is easy to chat with but my reason for only 4 stars is that I had hoped for just a little fluency and italian conversation (despite being forewarned) alongside the verb testing. I am sad as I believe Matthew is an excellent teacher and would have helped me greatly had I been a student of french or spanish. Sadly, he is not the correct choice for me with italian.
Reply from: Matthew: Thank you for the kind feedback. I enjoyed teaching you too and you definitely seemed happy with the lesson as you initially emailed me saying you definitely wanted to continue. You definitely told me you wanted your Italian lady to do the conversational component with you so that is partly why we agreed our 1st lesson anyway would have specific other things that were not Conversation. I believe this lesson was invaluable because you now know exactly what to work on with very useful tips too.

From Nitin (/5): Mathew is an excellent tutor who helped my son with his Maths and French studies. He quickly assessed my sons needs for upcoming exams and identified and addressed the specific areas where he was struggling and created learning plan which has helped him considerably in both subjects. He is also very organised, setting questions to be completed before the next visit and tackling all the key learning points. Throughout, he gave constructive feedback on how the tutoring was progressing and what my son needed to do. My son was very grateful for the help Mathew provided and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for an experienced tutor to help their son or daughter.

From Fatmir (/5): Quite an excellent tutor , extremely knowledgeable and will get you to a higher than average understanding of any topic , before the year I was predicated at a grade 4 for Spanish and after a couple months I got a grade 6 , he’ll push you to do better than most of your peers so you really stand out
