Personal Description:
My name is Margot and I come from France. I will be in Reigate for the year to come and will work as a French Teaching Assistant in Secondary School.
I have a bachelor's degree in English and German and would like to be a primary school teacher. I think that learning foreign languages is very important because you discover new cultures and it keeps your mind open.
It's never too late to learn a foreign language !!
Teaching Experience:
I volunteered in a nursery in France to help children in the building of simple sentences and to pronounce the sounds of the French language with a method invented by a speech therapist.
I have taught English as a tutor in France for children in primary school, in secondary school and at the university during 3 years (face to face and/or on Zoom).
I am currently a French Teaching Assistant and have been tutoring three girls (age 7, 9 and 10) and a German woman in French for 2 months now (face to face and on Zoom).
Teaching Approach:
I would say that the approach depends on the profile of the student. I think that learning a language has to stay fun because you are more determined to learn when you enjoy what you are doing.
In order to learn a language, you need to work on all the language skills : Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking (presentation or conversation).
With children, I tend to use games to learn some vocabulary (hangman, memory game… ) and roleplay to learn the basics of conversation. We will focus on the talking aspect of the language more than the written part of it, since they are already learning how to properly write their own language and some of them can't read yet.
With pupils going to secondary school, I usually help with the homework and then go a bit further than the lessons taught at school by adding new vocabulary and new topics.
With people in College or older who have already done French, we tend to discuss the way they want to work. I usually offer to work on a determined material (TV show, podcast, magazine… ) that would provide one of the skills and then I would supply more material to work on all the language skills. For example, if the student chooses a French TV show, watching the episode would work on the Listening skill and we would then talk about it, summarise the episodes (talking skill). After that, I would give them some articles related to the show to work on reading and ask them global questions about it, which would work on the writing skill. It is mainly by going over the mistakes together that we talk about grammar.
It's never too late to learn French!! For adults beginners in French, we would start with examples of simple conversations and try to understand and reproduce the examples to then move to more spontaneous conversations.
