I grew up in Colombia and therefore Spanish is my first language. Colombians like to pride themselves on speaking the most easy-to-understand Spanish in the Spanish-speaking world! I am also a graduate member of the British Psychological Society as a result of my psychology degree obtained in Colombia. I came over to England to marry my (English) husband in 2003 and obtained my PTLLS qualification in 2011. I have been teaching Spanish on a one to one basis ever since then. Before the pandemic, all my teaching was face to face; now most of it is online via Zoom or Skype. This has resulted in a much wider range of clients who are not necessarily local.
We live in South Croydon with our two children aged 16 and 23, and our fox hound Jack.
When I was working as a psychologist in Colombia I counselled at a school set up for the children of the police force. I held sessions with the children and their parents to discuss behavioural and adolescent issues in an educational environment. Given my background, my culture and my PTLLS qualification, I have a particular knowledge and instinct about how people learn effectively and how I can best help them to achieve their goals in learning Spanish.
I specialise in teaching Adults and students up to intermediate and GCSE level.
My approach is one to one. As explained earlier, I speak extremely clear Spanish. All my lessons are tailored to the exact requirements of the student as every student is different, and they learn in different ways. I always ensure that the subject matter of my lessons is as relevant as possible to what the student wants (and needs) to learn and so they can put their newly acquired Spanish into immediate effect.
I try whenever possible to use the exact same book that the student is using in the classroom so that my service is as closely matched to their requirements as possible. I also focus on the gaps that a student might have in grammar or vocabulary before their exam. For GCSE students, I use previous exam papers (from the same Board they are using) to shore up the student's exam technique.
For online students, I scan and email pdfs of all the material a few days before the lesson so that the student is clearly prepared.

Marcela is an excellent teacher.
Her method of teaching is directed at using the language.
I am now quite confident that my trip to Colombia in July will be fine.
My husband and I booked 10 lessons with Marcela to learn a little bit of basic conversational Spanish to help us communicate whilst on a trip to Colombia last year.
We found the lessons so good and have enjoyed learning a second language so much that we decided to keep it up!
Marcela’s teaching approach is perfect and the lessons always feel fun, but informative. I can’t believe how much I’ve learnt in just 18 months!
I can’t recommend Marcela highly enough, she is an excellent tutor.
Despite the unusual situation, Marcela did an absolutely fantastic job during the course and has been an enormous benefit. Her experience in teaching Spanish and her background in psychology made her not only sensitive to the client's needs but insightful about how best to structure the course for them.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.
Thank you very much for your comments. I enjoyed teaching you.
