Personal Description:
Passionate about perfect execution, careful with grammar, and excited about the ways in which language can express one's personality, I will endeavour to be the ideal Japanese tutor for you.
Teaching Experience:
Five years of music tuition experience in guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, and vocals (ongoing).
Four years of English teaching experience in Japan.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language since 2021.
Eight years of Japanese study with a unique insight to the language that differs from native speakers'.
Teaching Approach:
I can offer multiple lessons a week and advise my students to have at least one.
I believe teaching students from many different walks of life (primary school, secondary school, adults of various ages up to sixty) requires a somewhat flexible approach; some students learn best by choosing their own goals and working towards them while others need more teacher-led classes.
When it comes to languages, I believe a teacher must be calm, encouraging, and diligent with prompts. I have personally attended lessons in which I refused to use my target language purely due to my own fear of making a mistake. Although my teachers were very kind and professional, there were certain steps I believe they could have taken to alleviate my discomfort:
- Drilling new vocabulary with repetition at various speeds.
- Prompting with increasing detail when a student seems stuck.
- Taking every student-made effort seriously and discussing mistakes in as non-personal a way as possible.
- Ensuring proper understanding by using various comprehensive examples of vocabulary and grammar in relatable sentences.
JAPANESE lessons:
I first started studying Japanese in 2012 and really took to developing my literacy skills. I passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N2) in 2018 and lived and worked in Japanese schools from 2015 - 2019. I often sat the same kanji tests as my students on which I frequently achieved perfect scores.
As a non-native Japanese speaker, I understand the struggles of learning Japanese as a second language and can therefore offer more relatable insight than a native speaker can. I have studied and teach using Genki I and Genki II, Anki, Duolingo, Youtube, authentic Japanese kanji study books, Shin Kanzen Master, and I'm happy to use materials chosen by my students.

He is a great guitar teacher and we are very pleased we chose him.
My son is motivated to practice, really enjoying the lessons and already developing his skills and playing technique.
We would absolutely recommend Lloyd.
He was polite in his communication however last minute messaging regarding non commitment has been difficult to deal with. Request to confirm the dates and commitment from the tutor prior to paying the fee
Thanks from Neil
