Personal Description:
Language learning and teaching is something I see in myself both as a personality trait and a skill I have developed over the years. From the age of 5 I was already exposed to a number of languages in different contexts: Armenian at home, English outside, Greek at school and Russian through family friends. I have been exposed to many others later on in life.
Teaching languages is something I do both as a hobby and a profession. From a very young age I would teach my mother to read Greek and at university I would gather friends to teach Arabic.
I work in the field of political and social research, focusing on the Middle East, South Caucasus and Central Asia. I use my languages in my work on a daily basis and so I also hope to share how the language you are interested in is connected to the people who speak it.
Teaching Experience:
I've taught languages privately to individuals of all ages and backgrounds - from children as young as five to academics at universities. In addition, I have participated in various charitable initiatives in Armenia teaching languages at schools in villages to secondary school students.
Teaching Approach:
My language teaching method can be summarised in the following way: I initially prioritise teaching basic grammar (pronouns, prepositions, basic tenses, verb conjugation etc) first and foremost, setting up the basis of the language for the student. This is supplemented with practice of the most common vocabulary until this “base vocabulary” solidifies in the student’s mind. This basis allows the student to use new vocabulary and linguistic concepts in the language later on much more easily – the extended vocabulary and linguistic concepts are what I call the “decorative aspect” of a language. Following this stage, I prioritise immersion in the target language, exposing the student to natural dialogues, excerpts from songs, and later on to reading current debates on social issues and newspaper articles together.
Of course the method of language teaching will always be catered to the student. This will be assessed in our first lesson and I will have a discussion with the student about how they best learn a language and acquire new information.
