Hola, coucou and ciao!
My name's Qayya (said 'Kay-er') and I've taught French, Spanish and Italian for five years. My mum moved to the UK from Karachi when she was one. Immersing me in Hindi with Bollywood films, Urdu when cooking and teaching me to read classical Arabic before I'd even reached nursery, it was she who nurtured my love of languages.
After living in Normandy as an au-pair, I studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and later worked as a journalist for Diario SUR in Málaga, Spain. After graduating with a first and distinction in Modern European Languages BA (Hons) from the University of Liverpool in 2015, I began working as a tutor and a secondary-school teacher, in conjunction with undertaking a journalism qualification.
I now work in London as a news translator, reporter and editor, but decided to carry on teaching when I moved as I missed teaching!
From crab-spotting in a bog in Brittany to witnessing a meteor shower from the tallest peak in the Sierra Nevada, I'm grateful for the opportunities being multilingual has given me to make once in a lifetime memories - and hope, perhaps, to help you make your own!
BASES AND CALL-OUTS
○ My main base is in Tower Hamlets but I can come to you if you're close to Aldgate East. Otherwise, I'm currently not taking on students unless they're willing to travel to me in the Mile End area.
○ I am available on some weekends but not all - if you're looking for consistent regular weekend slots, unfortunately I can't provide that at the moment due to high demand.
○ I give a discount for the first class to help cover the website's fee for my contact details, so your first class is £15, not £25
○ The site makes its money through charging for tutors' details; tutors don't earn from these fees.
○ The site ONLY releases my number, address or email IF you buy them. It also monitors all student-tutor correspondence
○ If we exchange any details, moderators will delete them and terminate our memberships so DON'T ask my details or send me yours! The first part of your postcode is okay but otherwise, please don't!
○ If you're happy to go forward with lessons, buy the details, drop me a line or an email and we'll arrange a discounted lesson at your convenience ☺ I can't make first contact due to the new GDPR rules so please bear this in mind
○ I've taught between the ages of four and 70 - it's never too soon or too late to take up a language from scratch or to dust off your skills!
○ I've taught five couples, a family of three generations and a class of thirty kids in a school
○ I've prepared students of all ages for oral, reading, writing and listening exams at GCSE, 'AS' and 'A2' (WJEC, AQA, OCR and EDEXCEL)
○ I also teach KS2, KS3 and have assisted university students with interpreting exams and presentations
○ Workshops and corrective services for university-level exams and coursework provided from £10
○ I've taught three students with moderate to severe dyslexia and also have experience teaching autistic students
○ Whether you want to relocate, travel, do business or give your kids a stab at becoming bilingual, I tailor your classes to you!
All my current students, regardless of age, ability or aims, have described me in reviews as approachable, structured and encouraging – to me, trusting someone enough to be comfortable making mistakes in front of them, to have a laugh while learning and to enjoy progress are key in learning any discipline effectively.
Whatever your aims, strengths or weaknesses and however you learn as an individual, I structure classes based on what you want to learn and why. I want you to leave class understanding what you've learnt, knowing where improvement is needed and most importantly, feeling accomplished and able to ask questions or give feedback.
For exam prep, I have textbooks and past papers at your disposal. I aim to make you comprehensively solid on grammar application, topic-specific vocabulary and pronunciation (accent, stress). I also provide handy tips to impress examiners (polishing off punctuation, throwing in idioms and expressions, adding appropriate non-lexical utterances to fill pauses, complex grammar constructions, specialised vocab etc).
Whether for curriculum or non-academic purposes, I teach younger kids with games, pictures and music – it’s just more effective and less gruelling than written tests! I also use visual, audible and kinaesthetic memory aids. For adults and teens, I use similar but more structured, age-appropriate methods i.e. we listen to and learn song lyrics, watch films and do creative writing in the target language.
Homework is never compulsory but I try to start off by setting between three and five minutes of practice, research or reading for you to do a day until next class, rather than one half-hour block of work per week – this can slowly be increased if you find it manageable but little and often will commit information to your long-term memory.
I tailor oral and written exercises, which focus on language production (i.e. enabling you to speak and write in the target language). They aim to aid recall of vocabulary and also serve as grammar drills so we can eventually move onto translations and conversations. I also record tailored pronunciation exercises.
Classes veer away from lengthy explanations and err towards quickly equipping you to practise applying new skills, to bolster existing ones and to troubleshoot where improvement is needed – once you’re comfortable with a topic, we quickly move onto new things.
I prefer to choose a regular day and time to teach you namely as consistent intervals allow you time to process what you’ve learnt but I understand life is complex and try to be flexible.

I really enjoy teaching Jawad very much and am excited to see him continue progressing in Spanish :)
Your grammar level and range of vocab was already very good and you're sounding more and more French every day! Keep up the work with the accent practice and you'll soon find people think you're French when you're talking :)
My children love her and have come on so much with their Spanish since Ruqayyah has been teaching them.
I love teaching Lizzy and Anna :) Lizzy has a crazy memory considering she's only seven and Anna is amazing at spelling, presentation and attention to detail! She's very mature for a ten-year-old
They both have lovely manners and great potential in Spanish - thank you so much for choosing me as your teacher!
Lessons are always tailored, and they are always productive, fun and challenging, and the homework she sets is always really helpful.
Ruqayyah is a lovely person, so helpful and patient, and I can't wait to continue my lessons :)
She's already come to the class with good knowledge of Spanish and is very proactive with the homework I set her - I'm impressed with her ability to absorb the amount of information we pack into our sessions and am really pleased with her progress so far
If she carries on as she is, she'll be fluent in no time!
Ruqayyah is a really friendly tutor and always professional. The lessons are fun and we laugh a lot but they are very structured and focused towards what I want to achieve.
I am Dyslexic and she is very flexible with her teaching and is understanding of my needs. She is always well prepared for the lessons, and always happy to re-cover material that I have found difficult, or go into it further if I need more explanation or understanding. Her knowledge of languages really helps with understanding how to form sentences correctly and my pronunciation has improved very quickly.
Ruqayyah has been amazing and I have found my tuition to be an enjoyable experience. I do not hesitate to recommend her xxx
I've enjoyed watching her improve greatly over the course of our classes together and she's much quicker and more confident to answer than before - she always had an excellent accent, vocabulary range and knack for picking up new grammar rules
I'm really very proud of the progress she's made and, while we do always have a good laugh together, the dedication she's put into learning Spanish has been admirable thus far - thanks for choosing me as your tutor, Sarah! xxx
Homework is always extremly helpful.
Ruqayyah is very pacient and creative teacher!
He's very quick to pick up techniques to improve his phonetic abilities and has worked really hard since his first lesson.
I'm really satisfied with the work he's done so far and he has a lot of potential to do very well - can't wait to see where his French will take him!
I've thoroughly enjoyed teaching him so far and look forward to continue supporting him in his progress and making the most of his capabilities :) well done, Stuart!
I would very highly recommend Ruqayyah to anybody looking for a tutor. :)
In addition, he's been very committed to the work I've given him outside of class so far so I really do have high hopes for him!
I can safely say they have made massive progress in Spanish: their spoken, written and aural skills have soared since we first started, their articulation is fantastic and watching their confidence in their own abilities grow has been delightful :)
Just a little bit of practice really does go a long way - well done to the both of you!
Great, bright and committed student - he'll be chatting away in Spanish in no time :) practice makes perfect so keep it up!
Definitely on board with this programme (after-school extra-curricular Spanish for students and their parents to learn together) as I believe strongly in parents getting stuck in with their kids' educations - and it's fun/a bonus for them to learn a new language or skill alongside their kids too!
The course is a really progressive, sensible and holistic move for the kids on the school's part and even after just a week, I know it's going to be a fantastic experience teaching at Weatherhead :) looking forward to bringing in some non-alcoholic sangria to share out at next week's class!
I'm sad that they'll be leaving for Spain but very happy knowing they're going with a bit more practice under their belts. Thank you for choosing me as your tutor - it's been a real pleasure!
Great value for money
Fun to learn
Knows how people learn
I had to 2 months to learn Italian and she doing great job because she cares Andrew is motivated
Her pronunciation came along within the first hour of teaching her and she appears to have had little trouble understanding new concepts in grammar :) looking forward to building her confidence and to chatting away with her in Spanish!
Thanks for coming to me - I look forward to helping you learn to speak Spanish!
Looking forward to making more progress with you in preparation for your exams :)
She's made huge progress since she first started doing her nursery rhymes and flashcards - she now knows all of her body-parts in French and can string together little sentences.
Very proud of her hard work and am looking forward to doing some more games with her next time I see her!
