Personal Description:
My name is Jorik and I'm 33. I have nine years experience as a personal tutor, teaching assistant with GCSE/A-level students and in voluntary positions at two universities. I hold an MA (with Merit) in Comparative Literature (French and German) from University College London. I also hold a first class honours degree in English from the University of Amsterdam, during which I studied for a year at the University of Sussex, and on a scholarship. I'm a native speaker of English and Dutch, my French and German are at MA level, my Spanish level is good and I am learning Italian, Portuguese and Japanese. I am a fully qualified TEFL/ESOL/EAL teacher with excellent references from internationally renowned EFL schools in Oxford. I've worked teaching English and languages at a school for students on the autism spectrum and with related conditions such as ADHD and dyslexia. I have worked as an EAP teacher for a large UK university.
Teaching Experience:
I have more than nine years' experience as a personal tutor, specialising in Modern Foreign Languages and EFL, although I have also taught History, Geography, Philosophy & Critical Thinking and Drama. I have also frequently supervised creative writing sessions and theatre and stand-up comedy workshops as well as individual voice coaching sessions. I am also an experienced mentor, working on study skills and providing support to examination candidates and interpersonal skills for students on the Autism spectrum. In recent years, I have qualified as an SEND specialist, particularly in autism. **Removed By Admin**
Teaching Approach:
From my experience, teaching is about communication, empathy and stimulating creativity. To learn a language is to connect with an aspect of yourself you were previously unaware of, opening yourself up to new ways of thinking, cultures and histories. Everyone can learn any language, as long as they care. These language areas' Geography, History, Philosophy and cultures are always about empathising with another person or persons in their context, from their perspective. That is one of the reasons doing research on these topics is so engrossing: it is like getting to know someone intimately. I hope to communicate this fascination to my students every day of my working life.
