I studied Japanese at the University of Cambridge, and love every part of learning and teaching the language. I have 6 years' experience working as a private Japanese tutor in the UK and Japan. My complementary work as a professional actor on stage and screen (Royal Lyceum Theatre, CBBC) allows me to offer a unique, dynamic approach to tutoring. When desired, I can combine elements of self-confidence / public speaking training into my language and drama classes. I have worked with business professionals, actors, sportspeople, students and entrepreneurs to help them develop their language skills alongside their confidence.
For the third year of my BA study, I lived in Kyoto and studied Japanese at Doshisha University. I also passed the JLPT Level 1 examination. After graduating from Cambridge I returned to Japan for 6 months, volunteering on rural farms across the country and working as a private tutor and translator. I have worked as an EFL tutor since graduating from University and have worked with business professionals, actors, sportspeople, students and entrepreneurs to help them develop their language skills alongside their confidence.
I offer face-to-face and online teaching, and normally am happy to travel to the student.
I have worked as a private tutor for 6 years, both with private students and through a number of tutoring companies (UK-based and Japan-based). I offer face to face and online teaching, and run masterclasses for individuals and groups.
Through tutoring companies I have taught Japanese, EFL, Oxbridge Entry, 4-plus, 7-plus, Musical Theatre and Drama lessons. I have worked with children as young as 3 in formal tutoring settings (4-plus examinations / EFL) and have even greater experience working part-time in childcare centres, supporting children from just a few months old.
I have worked with language students of all levels, from beginners and casual learners, to degree-level learners. I am highly adaptable in my approach to tutoring and believe that there is no one-style-fits-all way to learn. I write thorough and detailed lesson materials for all individual students, regardless of subject, catering to their current abilities and future goals.
I offer Japanese classes to students of all levels, from beginner to degree level learners. I have coached students of Japanese through degree level exams and every level of the JLPT qualifications. As a non-native speaker, having been through the process of learning Japanese as an adult, I deeply understand the challenges that students face. As such, I can offer more support in learning methods, tips and tricks than a native speaker might.
Japanese can be a challenge to master, and most of the textbooks on the market skip over the intricacies of the language. Whilst I am very familiar with Genki and Minna no Nihongo, I have spent the past few years compiling my own lesson materials and can therefore tailor my lessons to my students' goals and current abilities, supplementing or replacing the traditional textbooks.
I have taught English as a Foreign Language to students from Japan, Korea, France, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, Ukraine, Turkey and Russia. I write my own lesson materials and as such can offer tailor made classes to suit each unique student: from more formal grammar based lessons to conversation classes, colloquial English classes, business English and public presentation classes, copywriting and proofreading services. I always mix speaking, writing and reading practice into each class.
SELF CONFIDENCE AND PUBLIC SPEAKING
I offer Self Confidence workshops for groups of any number (private 1 on 1 sessions also available). These are tailor-made, and can emphasise any combination of audition and interview skills, body confidence and/or strengthening personal intuition.
In both language learning and Drama, I believe that confidence is key. I hope to help my students never hold back in fear of making a mistake - just taking part and offering up an opinion is a valuable response, whatever form that takes.
I am naturally talkative and confident, but having worked with a wide variety of students, I know that some students feel intimidated by a tutor who pushes them to overly express themselves. More than anything, I try to encourage my students to gain confidence in their subject, and confidence communicating their unique ideas.

A Well structured lesson, combined with a passion for the history and culture of Japan, Jess breathes new life into teaching languages.
Her flexibility and understanding of costs is what put her above other tutors in this field, awaiting lesson three, and already i am really enjoying the experience!
Highly recommend Jess as a tutor!
