Personal Description:
Spanish was definitely my favourite subject in school. I’ve always had an interest in languages and along with having an A-level in Spanish, I have a good knowledge of both French and Italian. A big drive for me taking up tutoring is to increase the number of Anglophones who can speak a foreign language, a number which in my opinion is shamefully low. Beyond languages, I love being outdoors and travelling, especially by train, I’m quite a big rail enthusiast, but I’m also fans of hiking and cycling.
Teaching Experience:
While I am new to teaching I have spent the past year and a half of my life volunteering 2 hours a week at a scout group where I helped run activities for around 25 children aged 10-14. I also completed a 2 day mental health first aider training course in my previous job where I learnt how to deal with a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety.
Teaching Approach:
My first session for both subjects will be a free 15 minute call to establish why you think you need or want tutoring and which areas you need help with. For those reluctant about the subject, I will make it my mission to change their frame of mind.
Once we get going for any ability level, I will focus on good pronunciation and grammar even for basic phrases as it’s very easy to say the wrong thing (like in English). For GCSE students, I will avoid vocabulary list learning as by this stage it is much more effective to pick up words and phrases from texts. We will be reading passages, listening to Spanish radio/podcasts, learning different ways to express things and perfecting grammar (which is right or wrong and will be assessed). For everyone beyond beginner, the last 2 minutes of the session will be a conversation all in Spanish. For GCSE candidates, it is essential you can speak fluently for up to five minutes for the speaking exam and it must come across like a real conversation so this 2 minutes will gradually increase. We will also work on perfecting your speaking exam piece so it is not only correct but also shows many facets of the language.
