Personal Description:
On-line tuition only possible, currently, using a system similar to Skype . I AM CURRENTLY ONLY PROVIDING FRENCH AND GERMAN TUITION AND ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TUITION. I have taught French and German in a secondary school and also worked in Industry and Exporting. I graduated from Reading University in 1980 with a B.A. (Hons.) French. As part of my course I spent a year studying at Grenoble University. I make regular visits to both France and Germany for business purposes and pleasure. I also teach German to 'A' Level standard and English as a Foreign Language following a CELTA course at Swansea University in 2004.
Teaching Experience:
I taught French and German at a secondary school in the West Midlands and have been teaching both subjects privately for the past 15 years. Since starting work as a private tutor over 15 years ago many of my students have had excellent results. I used to organise regular visits for French visitors to my region.
Teaching Approach:
I have a relaxed approach to tutoring and have proved that this achieves the best results. I put my students at their ease realising that sometimes learners have a diffident approach to Modern Foreign Languages learning. My oldest student was 94 and my youngest was 6.
Having worked with a wide variety of students I have great experience of the needs of all learners.

I moved to France in July 2011 and although knowing the very basic school learnt French, I really needed to learn more to be able to blend in with the French way of life. I searched the Internet for a relevant French tutor and came across Howard , who was able to tutor me on-line.
I have had twice weekly lessons with Howard for about six months now and can honestly say that he has made my learning fun and memorable! He is patient, knowledgeable and trustworthy. He calms me down and can see when I start to panic. French is not an easy language to grasp, but he is encouraging and finds ways for me to remember certain phrases. I can even converse with my neighbour now, which is just wonderful. Even my husband is amazed how far I have come.
I have told my other British friends here in SW France of his excellent tutoring and they are also finding his teaching methods really helpful and beneficial. I dont know what I would do without his expertise and help!

Howard has taught me French on-line for the past 4 months and it has really worked for me.
Howard is a great teacher because he teaches what is important to his individual student and adapts the lesson to suit these requirements.
He will start off with the verbs, past and present tenses, etc. etc. but once these have been mastered he will turn the words into sentences that a person would actual use and not just text book french.
I have, and indeed do, thoroughly enjoy my hours lesson with Howard. He put me at ease from the outset and is, without double, a good teacher. He goes above and beyond trying to fit his schedule around me and that is something I really appreciate.
I would recommend learning French on-line to anyone, and would highly recommend Howard to be the teacher.

Howard is very approachable and understands every child is different and is able to tailor his work for them and prepares his lessons well.

My son is about to make his GCSE Choices, so I asked Howard to give an honest assessment of whether our son would do well at GCSE German, or not. I appreciated the time Howard spent on us, (setting up a practice Skype session for example) even though he was aware we may be short term customers. I would definitely recommend Howard. If you're at all concerned about Skype based/distance learning, don't be. Much to our surprise this worked really well and saved us traveling time and travel costs.

My son thoroughly improved his GCSE German grade and requested to have him right up until his exams. Howard provided excellent material for teaching, was very attentive and prompt with replies. My son always looked forward to his lessons, with having little interest in German and now would like to pursue the languauge further. I have had various tutors over the course of time but Howard has stood out. His tuition fees are very reasonable and thoroughly recommend him as a tutor. 5 stars are not enough

Howard is calm and patient and my son is enjoying his lessons and is already showing improvement. We have been using Howard in the run up to the GCSE's as German is a subject my son is struggling with.

From the very start, my Year 11 daughter found Howard's approach and manner just right and to my great relief ends each session smiling. The content is appropriate and tailored to the child's needs, and I have found that in a few short weeks my daughter's confidence and enjoyment of french has improved noticeably. In addition, Howard is extremely organised, reliable, flexible and accommodating, providing input even between sessions as needed with no additional charge. These sessions are a real positive each week for us, and help to alleviate the stress of impending exams. I would highly recommend Howard as a french tutor for GCSE.

He has also managed to instil enthusiasm for the subject into a very unsure child! She looks forward to her lessons and we can really see the results. Howard has also tailored the lessons to the GCSE syllabus so that she gets maximum benefit. The online/Skype format is also extremely convenient and has allowed us to go on holiday without interrupting lessons. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.
