Personal Description:
I am a TEFL certified tutor with over 10 years experience of teaching both English and Swahili to individuals of all language levels. I am a native Swahili speaker from Tanzania with strong links to and knowledge of Kenya as well. I love learning new languages, I have higher-basic level knowledge of French and Korean and I also know some basic Japanese and Thai. Besides being a tutor, I am also a freelance language service provider running my own consulting business and I have worked with agencies, different institutions, individuals etc in that capacity.

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching part time since 2004 but made it a full time job in 2012. So far I have taught mainly adults and a few younger students and I have experience of teaching at any level. My roster of current and former students is quite widespread and includes countries like the UK, France, Libya, Tanzania, S.Korea, Greece, Turkey, USA, Saudi Arabia etc
Teaching Approach:
I usually talk to the students to get a feel of their level of knowledge and also to just figure out their personalities so as to know how to create and deliver my lessons. I also ask for their opinion especially for those with experience of learning other languages as they tend to have an idea of what works for them. Materials I use include flash cards (which are one of the best ways to learn and remember new things), short stories and pictures which make lessons fun but very easy to remember at the same time. For Swahili lessons, I create free to download mp3 audio recordings for my students' supplementary purposes as well as pronunciation practice. This I usually alternate with regular homework as well as tests and pop quizzes to ensure the student is keeping up.

From Ruth (/5): Elise is my current Swahili tutor. I have been having lessons with her for a few months now and I think they are going very well! She designs good lesson plans which she sends you before every lesson, goes through everything at a good pace and explains things well. She also gives homework every week which is helpful to get in a bit of practice between lessons which she then marks at the start of the next lesson. I can feel my confidence improving with Elise and I think she is a very good tutor - she is very patient and never makes you feel like an idiot when you get something wrong which I think is very important in a tutor! I would definitely recommend Elise to anyone.

From Simon (/5): My wife and I had a short series of Swahili lessons with Elise before going on a trip to Kenya and Tanzania. We covered a lot of subjects (starting from absolute beginners) including learning all the sounds of individual and groups of letters, greetings, shopping, counting, telling the time, asking questions and a range of useful vocab. Elise sent us material before each lesson which was very helpful. We learned a lot in a very short period of time. Elise also made the lessons fun and we had a good laugh many times. Elise also explained a lot about the culture and history of the region and gave us advice for our trip. We would definitely recommend Elise. Asante sana, Elise!

From Dorothee (/5): Elise is an excellent teacher and very reliable and efficient. She sends preparation material in advance of the lesson and explains the language structures clearly. She also sends follow-up work and marks it before the next lesson. Her lessons are tailor-made and focus on the learner's needs. Elise uses support material like stories for children which help with the acquisition of vocabulary. She also recommends a basic textbook. Swahili with Elise is fun.

I have lessons twice a week, started beginning of June and when I visited Tanzania at the end of June I could understand signs and what people were saying much, much more than I ever did before. I very much enjoy my lessons and always look forward to the next one! I would recommend Elise for anyone who wants to learn Swahili.
