I have a first class degree in Spanish and Music with an additional distinction in spoken Spanish. I am a former member of the BBC Languages and BBC Bitesize teams and have lived and worked in Spain and Mexico.
I have 20 years experience tutoring Spanish, English as a foreign language and Music. I tutor students for GCSE and A Level Spanish exams and also teach general Spanish to individuals and small groups. I have experience of teaching adults and children of all ages, from 2 to 75 including home educated children, and adults and children with learning disabilities.
With GCSE and A Level students I work with the young person to identify gaps in their knowledge or understanding of Spanish which we then remedy, using a variety of approaches. For example, I find that when a student comes to me with a lack of confidence with spoken Spanish, it often turns out that there are certain aspects of grammar that they have missed or don't understand. After studying and practising the missing information, students find they have much greater confidence in speaking. Sometimes on the other hand, it is necessary to have a broader focus than the intricacies of language. Especially for A level, students need to be able to talk confidently about a whole range of challenging subjects. This can be difficult for a young person and I find it is often useful to spend time helping them develop their ability to form and express opinions, and argue different perspectives. Sometimes students feel they are not getting enough speaking practice and tutoring is an opportunity to spend extra time developing their spoken Spanish.
Thus far all my A Level and GCSE students have been successful in gaining either an A or a B in their exam. in 2018 for example, an A level student who was expected to get a D, gained a B. Another gained an A and is now going to university to study Spanish. In 2019 the A level Spanish student I coached gained an A and my GCSE student gained a 6.
I also teach general Spanish to individuals and small groups. In these classes we study Spanish from a variety of angles, learning for example useful tourist phrases, basic and then more advanced conversation, good pronunciation, Spanish grammar, and understanding of Spanish and Latin American culture through stories, poems and songs. I am a musician and sometimes use my own songs, rhymes and chants to help students learn aspects of the language. Group classes are £6 per person per class.
I teach weekdays during the school term.
