Personal Description:
I am a German native speaker and have been tutoring for many years. During that time, I have tutored GCSE, A-level and university students, adult learners as well as primary school, pre-school and nursery aged children.I grew up and completed my schooling in the South of Germany. Once I'd obtained my Abitur (A-level equivalent), I came to the UK as a Psychology student so I know what it's like when you're learning a new language! Alongside Psychology, I also studied German, Philosophy and Biology at university. After graduating, I worked as a research assistant (Roslin Institute, University of Liverpool), as a data analyst, then in commercial banking (relationship management and credit) for around a decade. Once I had my children, I worked in research again, as a translator and interviewer in German and, most recently, taught in a secondary school. I therefore have a wide range of experiences, gained in very different environments, and this combination of academic, business and education experience informs my teaching.
Teaching Experience:
I have around 20 years of experience tutoring German and English as a foreign language. I have taught on a one-to-one basis and small groups, with children from as young as 3 years old, to primary and secondary school, to adults in their retirement. Therefore, I have a detailed understanding of the requirements for various exams such as A1, A2, B1 of the Goethe Instute, GCSE and A-level exams. All my students have passed their exams and for those tutees at school, I am proud to say that I have, in the vast majority of cases, been able to greatly improve their grades. I have also taught Psychology undergraduates at a residential school offered by The Open University. More recently, I worked at a large secondary school.
Teaching Approach:
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing people improve their skills, develop and grow in confidence and knowing you've helped in this process. I adapt to students - their level, personality and preferred learning style - whilst providing opportunities to practice communication skills as well as grammar and syllabus content. I am always keen to tailor my lessons to suit my students.
I am happy to travel to tutees homes and charge 50p per mile. Lessons are payable on the day they are delivered.
My cancellation policy is as follows: if a student cancels a lesson less than 24 hours prior to the lesson taking place, 100% of the lesson is due to be paid.

Unfortunately it won't be possible for our daughter to take German A-Level but we hope she can continue taking lessons with Christine so she might gain a degree of fluency that she can use in the years to come. Thank you, Christine!
Update: so delighted he got a 9 in his exam!!! Congratulations to him!!!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words - I'm thrilled you are happy with the tutoring; it's always a pleasure to speak with your daughter and I look forward to our next lesson!
You requested a tutor (to which I agreed), but it turned out you didn't want any tutoring.
You misunderstood my correspondence: I requested further information about what you actually wanted and, as you had tried to post your phone number and wanted me to call you, I informed you that I was unable to call until you paid the website fee. You proceeded to pay the website fee and got upset at me for not doing a one-off assessment for you on the spot (to which I had not agreed at any point - I was busy driving all afternoon). Given the awkward situation, I offered to help as best as I could but you were no longer interested.
There's a German saying that springs to mind: Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne Ende!
I am sure he will do extremely well.
Update: I'm delighted he got a 9 - fantastic news - well done!
Update: fantastic news that she did so well in her A-levels and ended up gaining a first in her Psychology degree at university - congratulations!! Best of luck with her next venture, a Masters in Psychology!
Update: congratulations on your son getting a 9 in his GCSEs - well done!!
I am extremely pleased with the tuition so far. You understood my requirements very quickly and are providing the support I need very effectively. Our weekly sessions are valuable and enjoyable. I can already see a difference in my understanding and speaking.
Thank you
Howard
Update: both of them returned to me a couple of years later for GCSE preparations whilst they were being homeschooled in the UK; I was able to act as their assessor during COVID lockdown and they both achieved grade 9 - well done!! Finally, during A-levels (not German), one of the boys prepared with me for the C1 Goethe Institute exam, which he passed with flying colours, to enable him to study in a German-speaking country. Congratulations again and wishing you all the very best for the future!
