Personal Description:

Being able to communicate with a person in their own language, however simply, is the key to understanding a whole culture and different way of thinking. That's both exciting and rewarding!
My interest in learning languages started early on whilst at school. I studied German and French at university and spent four years living and working in Austria. After visiting Shanghai in 1997 I decided it was time to start learning Mandarin too. It is a fascinating language, in my opinion, full of hidden meanings and with a beautiful script too. There is much to learn!

Teaching Experience:

I trained as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language in 1985 and taught English in language schools in Cambridge for a couple of years. More recently, after many years of acting as a "host family mother" for foreign students coming to the UK to learn English, I decided that I really wanted to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm for languages and become an independent languages teacher. After some initial teacher training in schools, I began teaching languages again privately. I have so far taught short courses in German, French and Mandarin and English at various levels and to a variety of clients of all ages and nationalities.

Teaching Approach:

I aim to be a supportive and encouraging teacher who will help you to realise your potential as a language learner. I strongly believe that we can all learn to communicate in other languages and I know myself how rewarding it can be. I would like all my students to experience that too and to benefit from their commitment to learning. I will endeavour to design the course to suit your ability and needs and interests, where possible. I like to choose subjects that are interesting to you for reading, listening and discussion. When it comes to grammar, I hope to be able to show you how the language works and to keep it as simple and clear as possible.
