I am a Japanese language educator and a social scientist. I studied in Japan on the Japanese Ministry of Education scholarship and have a university degree in teaching Japanese as well as Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency (JLPT) Test and the JETRO Business Japanese certificate. Currently a doctoral researcher at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, I also work at the JLPT exam in London and am a member of the British Association for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language (BATJ).
In the time I took off from my academic career I worked for a number of Japanese multinationals and SMEs around the world. Using that experience as a Certified Cross-Cultural Trainer I give interactive workshops and media-enhanced talks about fascinating lesser known aspects of Japanese culture, art, history, and business.
I have taught Japanese for over 20 years. I have successfully prepared numerous students for their GCSE`s, A-levels, IB, and university examinations. I help with your Japanese school/university course. I provide full-on individual preparation for your Japanese exam as an external student. I also teach adults for business and hobby purposes and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students for essays, dissertations and exams.
My teaching approach is flexible, consistent, and friendly. No tutorial of mine is the same, as I tailor each to the student`s specific situation at hand. I use a variety of digital and print learning materials to suit my students`wishes and needs the best possible way.
In my teaching, I use the Socratic approach to help students develop an active understanding of their subject. That means supporting them closely towards finding their own answers, refining their own analytical skills, and ultimately gaining the full ability to continue on their own. I see my student as a star in their life project and myself as a stagehand whose job is to make sure that she or he realises their potential and achieves their purpose in life.

I would highly recommend.
He worked so easily with my difficultly understanding certain grammar points, made up jokes so I'd remember things better which helped me pass my university exam!
He was very clear, professional, kind and has an extensive knowledge on not just Japanese grammar but the reasons behind them which helped me understand things so much better.
Thank you so much for your help! I will definitely be asking for your help again :)
His knowledge of Japan has been really useful in helping me determine my desire to study there, and I have really valued his advice in piecing together an application to do so via the Japanese embassy. Artour has never once lacked enthusiasm or heart for the subject, which I find makes a huge difference in my enjoyment of his lessons. I would highly recommend Artour and his sense of humour to anyone else looking to study Japanese.
Given that I am a single parent in full time employment, which limits mine and my daughter’s availability for lessons, Artour has been extremely helpful, accommodating and flexible. He also seem to have a natural ability to curb my scatterbrain daughter’s forgetfulness.
I would highly recommend Artour as a Japanese teacher. After a few months of lessons I can say with confidence that his knowledge and abilities as a teacher are second to none!
