I just recently completed my Bachelor of Honours in Sociology and French Studies and am looking to put my french speaking, writing and reading skills to work! I recently moved to Fernie, British Columbia to live the outdoors lifestyle I've always dreamed of. During my time off I enjoy hiking, reading, cooking, snowboarding, running, socializing and playing the piano. I have found great joy within this town, although there is one thing missing; more french speakers!
Although my experience in teaching and tutoring are very minimal (tutoring workshops in my university classrooms), I believe that my french speaking skills along with my social skills will give me the tools I need to be a successful tutor.
I grew up in a french speaking home and as a new resident of Fernie, I have found very little french to be heard, read or spoken. Thus, making it difficult for english speakers to learn the french language in their everyday lives. Depending on what type of tutoring is required, I believe that speaking while participating in activities is indeed the best way to learn spoken french. For example, if a person with a base knowledge of french wants to improve their spoken french, I would go for a walk and simply chat. There is much to learn and much to converse about in our surroundings. However, learning to write and read french, as well as any other language, requires a less active approach such as staying put while reading and writing. For example, while tutoring to read, I would gladly help select appropriate french books that will encourage the individual to read french and spend an hour or so helping the individual read and pronounce words, phrases, sayings, etc.
