Personal Description:
My name is Shawn. I have a MD and a PhD. (biochemistry and pharmacology) degrees from McGill University; postdoctoral trainings from Harvard University. I am currently at University of Toronto affiliated hospitals for subspecialty trainings as a physician. My clinical practise requires superior communication skills in order to help my patients and their family members understand complex scientific concepts for their disease. In my spare times, I enjoy reading and chatting with interesting individuals exchanging ideas. I also enjoy outdoor activities such as rock climbing.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring and working as teaching assistant for undergraduate university students and high school students since 2008. Although my background expertise is in biology, genetics, physiology and medicine, my tutoring subjects ranging from high school chemistry and physics to master’s thesis development in microfluidics. I have also helped many students with their medical school admission and graduate school scholarship applications, including tips for standardized tests, personal assay, resume preparation and interview practices. I was also s a member of the graduate school, medical school, and residency admission team.
My previous experiences and qualifications includes:
- Tutoring university and high school science courses;
- Consultation for scholarship application, medical school admission and master’s thesis development with outstanding track records;
- Involvement in the medical school admission and Canadian Resident Matching Service file review and interview process;
- Editor-in-Chief of McGill Journal of Medicine managing scientific article submission, review and editing;
- Teaching assistance for microbiology and immunology classes.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to use analogies to simplify complex science concepts and my students often find them very helpful. Positive reinforcement and repetition from different angles are my powerful weapons when it comes to help my students consolidate memory without feeling boring. Laughters are the best way to keep my students engaged and interested in the subject and my passion and enthusiasm of the topic can be contagious! When helping with personal assay or project development, quick grasp of the key component makes the difference. I tend to stimulate the students to "think outside of the box" but stick to a tight logical "story line".
