Personal Description:

My name is Raquel and I am a Primary/Elementary trained teacher.

After completing me Bachelor of Science, major in Geology and minor in Biology, I worked for one year as a Geologist at the Iron Ore Company of Canada. It was while working here that I began volunteering at a CanSkate program teaching children to figure skate that I found my passion for teaching. It was at this time that I chose to return to school to pursue my Bachelor of Education in primary and elementary teaching.

Tutoring Experience:

I am currently a full-time Grade One teacher. In this position I have been responsible for developing math and literacy blocks. I am also responsible for the day to day teaching and lesson planning.

I have spent the last two years managing and working at an educational after school program where I was responsible for lesson planning, the well being of the children and assisting with the completion of homework. This program encompassed children from all different grade levels, ranging from kindergarten to grade 6.

During this time I also tutored students from kindergarten to grade 6 in Math and English.

I have also been a substitute teacher for two years in grade ranging from kindergarten to grade 6. During my time substituting I replaced a grade 3 teacher for a 3 month term.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that each student learns at their own pace and that we must support and nurture them in order to help them grow and flourish. I take the approach of starting with the small stuff first in order to help grow their confidence, making sure to not only include topics and activities that they are having difficulty with. I take this approach in order to give them the self-confidence and assurance to try more difficult tasks without the fear of failure. I also provide strategies which I teach the students in my classroom to help them with areas that they struggle with in Math and English.
