Bonjour et bienvenu à mon profil! My name is Oliver and I am a high-school French teacher in the Halton District School Board. I strive to help everyone learn to love languages and (re)kindle that enthusiasm for learning. Best of all, I come to you and can help your child learn and grow in the comfort of wherever you choose.
I completed my Masters of Teaching in 2017 from the University of Toronto and finished my BA with Honours at the University of Ottawa in 2014. I have experience with the IB program, Core/Extended/Immersion programs for French, and ESL Learners (I earned my TESOL in 2016).
But what do I do for fun? My hobbies include sports, music and travel. I have lived abroad in Asia, Europe and Australia with some great stories from my experiences. As well, I love reading and technology, but, most importantly, teaching truly is my passion. I work hard to make that learning experience fun for my students with interactive activities, role-playing exercises and intuitive, authentic practice opportunities.
I am an experienced OCT-certified teacher who is committed to seeing my students succeed.
With professional teaching experience in China and in Ontario, I have taught at a range of levels and in diverse environment. As well, I have tutored IB English over summers in Toronto. I was an IB student in high-school and a high-achieving student in university. I love learning, but teaching is even more fun!
In addition, I am passionate about French language/culture and spreading that love! I HATED learning languages when I was younger, but now I work to help students come to love languages much as I have. I am fluent in French and intermediate Italian, with a (small) spattering of Tagalog and Mandarin for good measure!
I love employing informal learning methods that, especially for languages, involve lots of brain-storming, speaking, and creative applications of newly practiced skills. I prefer methods of teaching that build on what students have already learned, either by reintroducing or reviewing material so that we can focus primarily on CONFIDENCE when using these new language abilities and KNOWLEDGE for when it is appropriate to apply them.
As a tutor, it is important for me to make lessons that work in conjunction with what students are learning in their classes, so that they can master what they are being tested on at the present, before we turn to more advanced and future topics.
Above all, I am flexible. I do what works for the students and I strive to help them find what works best for them. Learning is not just about doing well on tests or getting a good mark, it is mastering and applying skills that can be used FOR LIFE.
