Personal Description:

I am a recently retired Math teacher. My degree is in Electrical Engineering. Before becoming a teacher I worked as a Manufacturing Systems Engineer at General Motors in St. Catharines, Ontario. Much of my work at General Motors was computer-related. I taught computer courses for the first few years of teaching before switching to math only. I enjoy helping people and working with teenagers. As a teacher, I was known for my kindness and patience. I am married and have 3 adult children (2 boys and 1 girl) ages 20 to 26. I consider computers/technology a hobby, run regularly, enjoy listening to music (new and old), and like watching science fiction or action shows. I respect all people the same.

Tutoring Experience:

Math is one of my teachable subjects with the other being Computer Studies. I have taught math courses every year for the 27 years I have been teaching. For 18 years I have taught only math from grades 9 to 12 at all levels. I have taught every math course in the Ontario curriculum at least once with many of them taught repeatedly. For the last 9 years of my career, I was also the Math Department Head.

Tutoring Approach:

My priority is to ensure students truly understand the concepts. I explain the math ideas and solutions step by step and, if necessary, in many different ways until it is clear. I ask questions to check for understanding and to help lead a student through completing a problem. If a student has an Individual Education Plan at school, I like to be aware of this information to accommodate the student as needed. I also provide students with guidance on how to study and manage their school work. I am very open to student and parent input regarding tutoring and how I can best assist them. To guide the process, I like to become familiar with the materials given to them by their teacher. I am happy to consult with their teacher if necessary.
