Information About Mariet

Prince George tutor

Personal Description:

I am a young South African immigrant, currently living in Prince George, BC where I am studying my Master's degree in English Literature. Before moving to Prince George in 2018, I lived in Vancouver where I taught English as a Second Language at VGC International College and EC International. Upon completing my Master's later in 2019, I hope to move to Calgary and pursue a career in publishing.

Tutoring Experience:

Before emigrating to Canada in 2017, I was an undergraduate English language and literature tutor and high school teacher in South Africa, my home country. I taught grade 7-12 English language and literature for three years and have two postgraduate higher education teaching certificates. I am currently teaching academic writing, in addition to studying full time.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach any teaching environment with flexibility and generally have a very relaxed classroom atmosphere. Having good rapport with my students is one of the most important things when I consider the approach needed to teach a particular topic, as each person has a unique personality and different ways of understanding language. I typically start off with setting intended goals or outcomes for each lesson and then aim to follow a practical approach in teaching the topic at hand. I find that context and examples are very important in helping students grasp concepts, as well as presenting information in sizeable chunks, so as to not overload them and hinder their learning. I also try to apply whatever the topic is to current real-world situations, so as to illustrate the relevance of the topic and help in creating an understanding that can be applied to everyday situations.
