Personal Description:

I'm currently a third-year student at the University of Alberta, completing my combined honours degree in English and art history with a minor in French. When I'm not studying for an art history midterm or writing an English paper, I'm reading, doing embroidery, or enjoying a tea with friends!

Tutoring Experience:

I've been tutoring since I was 16, and have worked with one-on-one with 13-16 year-old students in English, study skills, and essay writing!
Though I'm not currently working, I have volunteered for Frontier College in their reading circle program, helping children learn to read and write, and the Art Gallery of Alberta as a general volunteer, building on my experience working for summer camps, as a private tutor, and as a peer tutor in high school.

Tutoring Approach:

I always do my best to take a friendly, open approach to all the students I work with, which means relating to them as much as possible and encouraging a love of English and essay-writing by showing them how much I enjoy it.
With either subject, the first step is always to get to know the student - and not just their academic interests or challenges, but their favourite sports or book, whether or not like enjoy art or music. Then, asking the student to show me assignments that they're proud of and not-so-proud of, not as a means of scolding them for their struggles, but to have a full appraisal of the student's evaluations of their own work. From what I've noticed, students who struggle with a subject actually do so because of low self-confidence, so acknowledging and encouraging students' mistakes (though it's a cliché, it really is the best way to learn), and praising them when they improve!
