Personal Description:
I am a retired elementary teacher and a father of three, now adult, children. I have a great love of children's literature and I enjoy problem solving, puzzles, and brain teasers, especially those involving the STEM subjects. I believe that learning is a lifelong process and enjoy continuing to learn new things myself. There is a lot of joy and fun that can come from learning, and I like to help those I teach find that experience.
Tutoring Experience:
I am an Ontario College of Teachers certified teacher and have 30 years of experience as an elementary educator. I have taught homerooms from grade 1 to grade 5, as well as music, physical education, visual arts and elementary ESL. My assignments have also included time as the school teacher-librarian. Prior to beginning my career as a classroom teacher I taught in an ESL summer program, gave private music lessons, and worked with the developmentally challenged.
Tutoring Approach:
Tutoring should be based on the needs of the individual rather than a prescribed and rigid set of lessons. Goals should be agreed upon and the lessons should provide the students with everything they need to achieve their goals. Every small step takes you closer to your goal, and therefore each small step is a success.
