Personal Description:

Hey there! My name is Flynn, and I'm a fun and passionate tutor in my second year of college who's ready to help future generations of students achieve their dreams. As someone who's still in school, I know just how challenging getting an education can be. That's why I'm sympathetic to, and willing to accommodate for, any challenges my students may face. I design my lesson plans to play on strengths and bolster weaknesses, ensuring that they get exactly what they need to excel in their courses while working on their confidence and enjoying themselves.

Tutoring Experience:

I’ve spent three years as a summer counselor at various Ontario camps. These have ranged from an art camp to a survival-oriented fishing and hunting camp, where the director of the camp personally invited me back for the next year. While helping the kids grow and teaching them the skills they needed, I also learned from them. I discovered the importance of cooperation and mutual goal setting in learning, and the value of letting people grow on their own and discover things for themselves. I learned that even the kids who aren’t ‘academic’ are often extremely intelligent and capable people with their own unique sets of skills; all they need is a bit of understanding and encouragement to help them thrive and become the people they want to be.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is about more than rote memorization of facts; it’s more than equations and obscure English novels. Teaching is passing on skills that will allow the student to continue learning, such as the ability to think critically about the information they take in. My student-led lesson plans help the learner discover the answers for themselves, rather than having me simply give them the information and expect them to memorize it. They will not only learn what they need to pass their classes, but they’ll do so in an environment that allows them to explore and reach their own conclusions about the topics I teach. This style of teaching is difficult without trust, which is why I do my best to foster a genuine bond with my students. This ensures they have fun and feel comfortable while learning the knowledge and skills they need to be successful.
