Personal Description:

I am a certified secondary school teacher and have taught Chemistry 11, Chemistry 12, and Science in British Columbia secondary schools for 35 years.
After retiring from a very fulfilling career in the classroom, I decided I wanted to utilize my experience and thorough knowledge of secondary school level chemistry to continue helping students.
I have tutored chemistry both person-to-person in the area I live (Okanagan Valley in BC) and extensively online for 8 years and I absolutely love it.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught chemistry and science in secondary schools including McBride Secondary School (3 years) and Summerland Secondary School (32 years).
I have tutored chemistry and general science both person-to-person and online for the last 8 years and continue to do so.
I create educational videos for the BC Learning Network for use in their online courses.
I mark and do some consulting for Southern Central Interior Distance Education School (SCIDES) for 3 years.
I worked for several years doing content development for Castle Rock Research Company based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Tutoring Approach:

To me, tutoring is all about helping students understand concepts in a way that is relevant to them and enabling them to realize their full potential. With all my students I quickly get to know what kind of help they need, their particular learning styles, and exactly what I can do to help them best. I am very patient and understanding. I think it is very important to establish a good rapport with students and provide an comfortable atmosphere to learn.

He is helping my daughter complete her Chemistry 12 course, with a greater understanding of chemistry than she ever had before. He provides her with lots of resources, identifies areas of weakness, and takes the time to ensure that she understands all of the concepts. He uses various illustrations, analogies and examples to breakdown complex information. Throughout each session he quizzes her to ensure her understanding, building up her confidence and passion for the subject. In addition to my daughters comments above I need to say that I, as a father, am so happy that we found Darrol at First Tutors. My daughter, a bright young high school student, struggled in her Chem 12 class, a concerned parent we wanted to find some sort of a tutor, I'm happy to say we found it on the internet, wow so impressed and relieved. Right off the bat Darrol made it extremely easy for my daughter, he was technically sound, he had simple instructions on how to teach and was a great communicator. Before we knew it she was learning 1 on 1, her Chem 12 mark went from a C to an A. If your a concerned parent, let me set you a ease and offer up Darrol as a Tutor, if you hire him all your worries will go away.

From Amanda (5/5): (Secondary Chemistry) Darrol is the best tutor that we’ve ever worked with. He was a high school chemistry teacher before retirement. We are so grateful finding him as my son’s tutor because he is an expert. When he worked with my son, he knew the subject’s concepts, ideas and problems inside out and could recognize the importance of aligning with what’s going on in the classroom. He’s patient, punctual and very flexible. Even once a time when we asked for a session only 1 hour in advance he still managed to work with my son and helped my son well prepared for the exam on the next day. Another thing that I love the best is that after each online session, Darrol always sent back the materials with what they’ve learned today as well as what he has explained and demonstrated so my son could review them after the session. If anybody who is looking for a chemistry tutor, I strongly recommend him.
