Information About Alexandra
Oakville tutorPersonal Description:
Hi there!
My name's Alex and I'm currently studying at Queens University towards a bachelors in both Education and English. I've been really passionate about learning and teaching from a young age and have lots of experience tutoring others in both professional and non-professional capacities as a result.
My favourite subjects to tutor in are Math and English! I was ahead in math all through my own schooling so I spent a lot of time helping explain concepts to peers which is actually what made me decide to pursue education. I read anything I can get my hands on, spent high school peer editing papers for ESL friends, and was published by CBC as the first place winner of a Shakespearean writing contest.
Tutoring Experience:
- 3 years volunteering with Big Brother Big Sister's Homework Club (meeting weekly to work 1 on 1 with a child struggling to keep up with course work to help keep them on track)
- 1 year volunteering with Disabilities Association of Halton-Hamilton's Reading Rocks program (meeting twice a week to work with a child with a learning disability to improve their literacy skills)
- 3 years camp leading (organizing and running games and instruction for children aged 4-10)
- 1 year in-home tutoring
Tutoring Approach:
I think tutoring's most effective when done in lower stress contexts such as games. I like to introduce concepts at the beginning of sessions and practice them a bit so that we can game-ify them at the ends of sessions.
