Information about Jennifer - Darley tutor
This is how 2 referees rated Jennifer:
I am a professional editor, an English tutor, admin assistant/VA and a creative fiction writer. I love the English language and find great joy in helping others to enjoy it too. In April 2018, I started an online creative writing group for writers of all abilities and genres, as a way to connect with other writers and remove some of the isolation and solitude of being a writer.
I spend my spare time ballroom dancing and writing fantasy fiction with my fiance who shares these passions. I love books and films, particularly in the fantasy fiction, sci-fi and crime fiction genres. I am currently working on a series of fantasy novels which I hope to publish within the next two years. I would love to travel the world with my fiance and spend my time writing. I have a passion for pre-modern architecture, history and culture.
I have been tutoring English since 2012. I was a study mentor for two years at La Trobe University and assisted with the English as a Second Language program at Chisholm College, La Trobe University.
Currently, my tutoring clients range from prep to year 9, as well as international visitors preparing to take the IELTS exam and immigrants wishing to improve their English skills for career progression.
My approach to editing and tutoring are very similar. I like to be a gentle guiding hand and treat each negative with a positive outlook, eg. incorrect sentence structure - 'how could we improve this' NOT 'this is wrong'.
When working with kids I tend to use word cards or games, and, in regards to spelling, will encourage the child to self-assess whether they have spelt the word correctly.
With older students, I find that allowing them to set their own goals and providing them with action steps is a very useful tool in helping them to improve.
I have no set method of tutoring and will change and adapt to my student and their best method of learning.
