Personal Description:

I am a retired businessman with Bachelor of Commerce and MBA degrees. At 22, I was the youngest person in South Africa to receive an MBA, after being in the Navy for compulsory 1 year Military Service. Until recently I owned a tourism business called **Web Address Removed** I have a lifetime of experience in the IT, Automotive and Tourism Businesses and am also a registered, fully qualified South African National Tourist and Nature Guide. With a son of 14, I understand and relate well to teenage Maths students. My personality is extrovert, friendly, positive and entertainingly humorous. My hourly rate is the same for 1 or 2 students - So if you can bring along a friend, this halves your parent’s costs!

Tuition Experience:

Since 17.03.2020, until now (being 9 th Aug 2020), my 14 year old son Roy in High School Grade 9 has had to be at home due to the South African Covid Lockdown. I have used this time very positively by teaching him Maths. After 1 and a half hours per day, between 1st of April and the end of June, we had completed the entire Grade 9 maths syllabus. He has now written the final grade 9 exam and obtained 86%! Until now, he always struggled with maths, never obtaining more than about 42%.(even with the help of extra maths tutors other than myself). Besides the above, I have done a lot of part-time after hours and on the job full-time adult education and training in the fields of IT, Marketing and Management. After long hard working days my students and I were all tired but I still triumphed in educating and entertaining them to get Diplomas in Marketing Management.

Tutoring Approach:

My motto in Maths tutoring is just common sense - “PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT”, “BE PATIENT” and “KEEP IT SIMPLE”, when explaining. My son and I have done every example in every exercise in his textbook and this is what I expect of my students. I first teach the concept, provide lots of relevant homework and then in the next lesson, explain the examples the learners got incorrect and/or did not understand. This is how my maths tutor when I was a schoolboy myself taught me how to master maths.
I believe the key to my success as a maths tutor, is not being a maths wizard myself, but my ability to meet my students at their level of development, being patient, empathetic, friendly and even entertaining. I can tutor online only, between 2 and 10 Pm. Australian time in Summer and 3 and 10 PM. in winter. I can teach in my home language of English, or Afrikaans.
