Personal Description:

I have recently graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire with a Masters in Composition (Distinction) funded by EMI Music Sound Foundation. Prior to my Postgraduate education as a composer, I studied as a trumpet player at Leeds College of Music graduating with a BA hons Classical Performance (2:1). I am now working as a freelance musician balancing my teaching commitments with work both as a trumpet player and as a composer.

Other than my current teaching commitments, additional musical engagements include orchestral work, wedding gigs, ongoing performer/composer projects with an opera company and copying and arranging work.

I am a well rounded, versatile musician with much experience playing, as a trumpet player and a conductor, very different styles of music in a wide variety of contexts and ensembles (orchestras, chamber groups, brass/wind bands, pop groups, jazz/big bands).

Tutoring Experience:

I have extensive experience teaching trumpet to students of various ages and abilities. I currently teach trumpet in schools and to private students across Birmingham as well as composition at one of Birmingham's leading primary schools. At this school, I use music technology as an aid to teach composition to groups of children, some of whom often having no previous instrumental or compositional experience. I am also currently offering music theory lessons (grades 1 - 5), as well as lessons in composition and music technology using Cubase, Logic and Sibelius.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is immensely important to engage with a student from the very first lesson and that one should show great enthusiasm, personality and passion in their teaching. I am hugely passionate about my work as a composer and I feel this energy, drive and love for my work really comes across in my teaching. I can easily adapt my teaching style depending on the student’s ability and musical experience. I am always quick to understand exactly what a student wants to get out of the learning experience.

I apply a simple and straight forward approach to all disciplines that I teach. When teaching trumpet, I focus on fundamental principles that are intrinsic to an early development of technique. I aim to keep my students relaxed and comfortable, ensuring they are able to maximise their concentration and really understand their actions in order for them to grasp exactly how they are able to produce a sound.

It is important for me to give a student freedom to make his/her own decisions without too much of my influence. From my experience, a student advances and benefits greatly from drawing conclusions and working out solutions to problems with technique in their own mind. My guidance gives them confidence and reassurance and helps them to ensure they are developing a solid, fundamental technique.

My approach falls into two essential basics, breathing and singing. I get my beginner students to sing everything they play on the trumpet in order for them to understand how important it is to be able to hear every pitch before they play. I ensure that my students understand that they are in control both physically and mentally. As long as one understands how to breathe correctly, one can play the trumpet.

I apply similar teaching techniques when teaching composition and music technology. When teaching a student with no musical experience, one has to avoid using musical jargon that the student might not understand. I have found analogies to be a useful tool when trying to explain a complex technical term like structure to my students and I am able to break down theoretical aspects of composing in a very clear and simple way.
