Personal Description:

I am a teacher, novelist, and musician from Scotland. I've played in a band for many years, having started in the open mic clubs of Edinburgh and London. I enjoy helping students to tackle their difficulties and discover the joy of playing.

Lessons at my house or yours. Online tutoring can be a great way to keep you practising.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught music, languages, creative writing for many years, in schools, university and privately.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach rock, pop, folk, blues and jazz, learning by ear rather than sheet music. This is a chord-based approach to learning, and works well for piano, guitar, ukulele and bass.

I love enthusing students through the music they love.

Guitar/Piano: What can you make practise more than wanting to sing your favourite songs? (Or play along with them on the bass?)

You choose a few favourite songs. I work out simple chords. We build up your ability through simplified building blocks, chord by chord, rhythm by rhythm.

I am a self-taught musician. I've played in bands for years.

I can help you manipulate the building blocks of music. I present playing as a challenge and theory as a game. I suggest ways to keep practising; and I point the way to more complex accomplishments.

I am happy to teach online as well as in person: with a committed tutee, this can work as well as tuition in person.
