Personal Description:
I am professional vocalist/songwriter, session singer and vocal coach with over 20 years of training/performing experience and over 8 years coaching experience. I have performed and recorded in all manner of settings and in many genres during my career. I now balance my performing and recording commitments with a limited amount of coaching, but I am first and foremost a singer and I believe this is actually a very strong selling point. I am out there every week gigging and recording as a working professional singer, not just a teacher.
Tutoring Experience:
I set up my vocal coaching business (Bristol Vocal Tuition) in 2009 after graduating from the world-renowned Dartington College of Arts with a 1st Class degree in Music, specialising in vocal performance. I have since coached hundreds of singers in the Bristol area of all ages, abilities and styles. I specialise in jazz, blues, soul and pop related styles, but was classically trained and can therefore cover most styles with ease including classical/operatic arias and songs in Italian, Latin and German. I have taught in schools, community centres, worked with children and adults with special educational needs, and coached groups, bands and choirs. I have also worked as a vocal consultant to A&R companies and record labels, working with their artists to improve and protect their voices. I also run songwriting and performance skills sessions.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching is always tailored to the individual and their specific needs/goals. There isn't a 'one size fits all' lesson… I use a variety of tools and approaches depending on the client. I keep up-to-date with the latest vocal research and theory and make sure my methods are academically sound and safe. I believe it's important to teach people how their voice actually works in a physiological sense. I try to do this in the least boring/intimidating way possible! I encourage students to develop their own style through improvisational techniques where appropriate.
