Personal Description:
I am a double bass player and writer based in South Wales and have been playing the bass for over 14 years. I have a background in classical performance, I studied classical double bass and piano for around 10 years before moving to focussing mostly on jazz and modern music. Some recent musical highlights include recording ‘Home’ with the Eddie Gripper trio, and two singles with my band Orbit Street, performing with the MUN jazz orchestra at The Rooms, St. John’s and playing in the ‘Brazilian Music Special’ with Huw Warren and Seu Gaio at Brecon Jazz Festival. Recently, I have studied with Yuri Golubev, Jim Vivian, Florian Hoefner and Huw Warren alongside working towards my BA in Mathematics and Music at Cardiff University.
Tutoring Experience:
My teaching experience includes assisting with ensembles during my time at Treorchy Comprehensive School (2019), leading ensembles at Cardiff University (2021) and assistant tutoring on the Original Jazz Summer School 2022.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe music tuition should come from a place of engaging with the art of playing and not solely on passing exams or similar. I also know that solid technique and foundations on the instrument are very important, especially for instruments as physically demanding as double and electric bass. My teaching combines these focus points, and I work with students to improve their all round musicality, instrumental technique and playing ability. For students looking to study the classical repertoire, I am happy to work on the grade syllabi, as well as offering some alternative repertoire to dive into before or in between gradings. For those looking to focus on jazz or modern music, we will work on the music that most interests the student. I will also provide other repertoire/exercises appropriate for the student's individual needs.
