Information About Tom - Chiswick teacher

Personal Description:

Cornish-born Horn player Tom studied the horn in France, before moving back to Cornwall, where he was taught by Jaqueline Kershaw who inspired him to pursue a career as a horn player. In 2019, Tom won the prestigious Cornwall Musician of the Year Award upon winning a full scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music.

Tom is currently studying with Tim Jones and Kira Doherty at the Royal College of Music, London where he is the holder of the Wyseliot Scholarship and has received first class honours for each of his end of year recitals to date. He has played in masterclasses with Alec Frank-Gemmil, Steven James, Katy Woolley and Stefan Dohr. Tom is also a very keen chamber musician and has been offered a scholarship to attend the British Isles Music Festival in the summer of 2022. As a freelance orchestral player, Tom enjoys regular work with orchestras around the UK.

Tutoring Experience:

As a teacher, education is a very important part of Tom's life and has been involved in outreach programmes designed to give underprivileged children an opportunity to have free music lessons. Tom is also a keen composer, having recently been commissioned to write a piece for large string orchestra and another piece for twelve horns with parts ranging from beginner to advanced.

Tutoring Approach:

Tom has privately taught for three years now and has had the opportunity to tutor pupils of a variety of ages and abilities. Tom has a very pragmatic approach to teaching and his experience allows him to quickly identify how best to advance a pupil. Tom mostly uses ABRSM and Trinity exam boards but will not put any pressure on anyone to take exams if they don’t wish to.
