Personal Description:
I now also offer ONLINE LESSONS, to help during the Covid-19 crisis.
I began studying the piano at the age of four. Having won numerous international competitions and scholarships, I went on to study at Harvard (B.A. 1990 magna cum laude), Vienna (Erasmus) and Oxford universities (D.Phil, 1997). Locally, I have performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the Holywell Music Room and Sheldonian Theatre.
Besides piano teaching, I have lectured at Oxford and the Open University, and published a wide range of articles and program notes, ranging from the Music Review to Deutsche Grammophon. As a composer, my works are published and performed on both sides of the Atlantic (published by Manduca Music). I have released two solo cds of original and more traditional repertoire (available on iTunes and Spotify).
REVIEWS:
‘An amazing variety of sonorities and forward momentum’ – Clavier
‘The venerable Holywell Music Room has a long history of hosting fine musicians and this evening was no exception’ – Daily Info
‘A very expressive performance. He kept the audience riveted…’ - Cherwell
Tutoring Experience:
I now also offer ONLINE LESSONS, to help during the Covid-19 crisis.
With more than 30 years' experience, I have taught piano, theory and composition in Oxford since 1997. My students range from beginners to advanced, including children, university students, music teachers - as well as lecturers at the University. In addition to teaching piano, I have also lectured on music history and performance practice at Oxford and the Open University.
Tutoring Approach:
I take a holistic view of teaching, allowing each student to express their own personality through the music and keys. In order to do so effectively, technique and an understanding of musical issues are important - and this forms a part of each lesson. I hope this doesn't sound too serious - we usually have a lot of fun too!
I welcome children, university students and adults alike, and will travel to your home for lessons.
