Personal Description:

I fell in love with the recorder when 7 years old, and then later took up the flute and the piano before gaining a place at the Royal Academy of Music as a Junior Exhibitioner. I achieved Grade 8 with distinction, and then did a Music deegree at Exeter university, which was followed by a year at the Guildhall School of Music where I held a scholarship, and followed the Early Music Performance Course. I have performed widely across the UK and Europe, and have been teaching for 30 years… I took up Clarinet rather late in life and also passed my grade 8 with distinction, and have been teaching clarinet since then , children and adults, and one ex recorder student who had successfully passed Grade 8 Recorder took up clarinet with me and reached a comfortable Grade 8 standard within just over two years… I am very proud of him.

Tutoring Experience:

My first job was with Young Music Makers in Chalk Farm, and I have worked in several Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Music Schools including the Centre for Young Musicians and the Pimlico Special Music Course.
I also have a thriving private practice, with students from beginner though grade 1- diploma level, and currently work also in a primary school and a secondary school.

Tutoring Approach:

Some children prefer to play by ear, and some prefer to read music. I believe it is my job to equip them with all the skills they will need, so that they can play by ear, sightread, memorise, improvise, and as well all that, develop good technical habits on their chosen instrument, so that they can express their own musicality effectively. They will be given performance opportunities 2 or 3 times per school year, in congenial surroundings in front of parents and peers, and will also be able to work towards grade exams if they wish.
