Personal Description:

Born in Edinburgh, I qualified as a professional piano teacher following studies at Napier College, where I was awarded an ‘outstanding student’ medal.
I have two professional diplomas in piano teaching awarded by the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) and the Guildhall School of Music (LGSM).
I also studied music at the University of Birmingham, graduating with a B.Mus (Hons). Whilst there I was fortunate to be taught by the distinguished Hungarian pianist Joseph Weingarten, a graduate of the Liszt Academy in Budapest, whose teachers included both Kodaly and Dohnanyi.
I am also a professionally qualified youth worker with a Postgraduate Certificate in Youth and Community Studies awarded by Brunel University.
A member of the Musician’s Union, my varied career includes teaching, accompanying and performing concerto, solo and chamber music. I have performed throughout Britain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Now living in Blandford Forum, I am in great demand as a teacher an accompanist.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 30 years’ experience in teaching. I particularly enjoy teaching young beginners but am equally experienced in teaching teenagers and adults, whether beginners or advanced pianists.
All students I’ve entered for exams have passed with merit or distinction. One of my former pupils is now principle conductor with the Sri Lanka Symphony Orchestra!
I am also a professionally qualified youth worker skilled in motivating young people to achieve their full potential.

Tutoring Approach:

All of my lessons are individually tailored, and taught on a one-to-one basis.
I specialise in teaching classical music but support and encourage all styles. Every lesson is tailored to the individual student’s aptitude and needs. My own musical tastes are many and varied, and I enjoy supporting students in discovering the music that best suits them.
Theory work is usually incorporated into lessons but you can study theory as a separate subject if you wish. I am experienced in fast-tracking students who need to pass ABRSM grade 5 theory and run music theory groups when possible.
I recommend an initial consultation lesson, which is absolutely free, as I think it’s important to meet face-to-face before making any commitments. In the student-teacher relationship, some chemistries work better than others, and chemistry can make or break the learning dynamic.
