Personal Description:

I achieved a 1st class graduate of Leeds University (music), and have over 20 years tuition experience. I regularly enter students for grade exams (Rockschool, ABRSM, RGT), with several having achieved grade 8 in guitar and bass. Students have also progressed onto FE and HE courses including degree courses at Leeds College of Music, Leeds University and Huddersfield University.

I also have composition / production experience working through Coda Productions including broadcast credits. I have completed commissions in a range of areas including: TV title credits, film, documentary and animation scores, dance theatre, corporate projects and library music.

I regularly perform nationally with several bands on guitar and bass, and gigs have included Download, Guilfest and Mathew St Festivals as well as tours in France and Germany.

Tutoring Experience:

Alongside private tuition, I've worked for Kirkless, Leeds, Leicester and Wakefield music services. I have also worked for Access to Music at centres in Bridlington, Hull and Leicester, during which time I set up a pre-foundation course aimed at encouraging failing students back into education.

I also founded Coda Guitar in 2009, an online video tuition site which offers lessons to both the general public and secondary schools. Coda is used nationally with local schools from Wakefield and Dewsbury also participating.

Tutoring Approach:

For guitar, students can learn on electric, steel string acoustic, or nylon string classical instruments. For bass, lessons focus on electric bass technique. You can contact to discuss any other requirements.

Lessons cater for players of all ages and abilities, and cover styles to suit musical tastes: from rock to metal, jazz to blues, country to folk, indie to pop, funk to reggae, classical and more… You can learn at your own pace whether it’s for fun, following accelerated learning, working towards grade exams, following GCSE and A-level courses, or if you need help with auditions.

Lessons are often based around learning songs which reflect students’ tastes, and which introduce new techniques to help development.

Areas covered in guitar lessons include:

picking and fretting hand technique for general playing
lead guitar – riffs and scales / solo techniques / improvisation
rhythm guitar – open chords / barre chords / power chords / strumming techniques
fingerpicking and hybrid picking for classical / folk / blues and jazz styles

slap technique at intermediate level and above
fretting hand technique
basslines using riffs (from scales), and following chord progressions
