Personal Description:
I am a highly skilled and music analyst with a 2:1 from the University of Birmingham. At university I was selected to assist at an international conference held by the Society for Music Analysis, because of my excellent ability.
I am a professionally trained classical singer and pianist and a jazz trumpeter. I am particularly interested in jazz and film music.
Tutoring Experience:
Whilst I am new to formal tutoring, I bring my wealth of musical knowledge and my strong ability as a musician.
Academically, I was encouraged by scholars at university to pursue an academic career writing about film music. I received an A* in Music at GCSE and A-Level, including scoring 100% for my A-Level composition. My strengths in composition and orchestration have only grown since studying with contemporary professional composers at university.
As a performer, I was a tenor scholar with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus, through which I sang for Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra in the BBC Proms. I also sang under choral composer Bob Chilcott. As a child I sang as a chorister, and I can also assist with preparation for exams with the Royal School of Church Music.
Tutoring Approach:
I tailor my approach to music tuition to the specific needs and interests of each student.
As the only musician in my family, I know first-hand the upfront challenge which music theory poses for new musicians. I can build the foundational knowledge which every musician needs. To this end, I can teach the basics needed for aspiring songwriters and I can prepare you to ace exams like ABRSM Grade 5 Theory.
I can also assist up to degree-level analysis. My skills and experience are perfectly suited for students who want to succeed at GCSE and A-Level, and even helping older students who want to improve their Bach chorales, analysis and principles of orchestration.
Music education in the UK is critically underfunded and I am very happy to discuss discounted rates for students in need of support.
