Personal Description:

Ruby has been playing the violin since the age of 3, studying at the Royal Academy of Music (Junior) London. Then completing a BA (Hons) Degree in Music in 2004 and an MA postgraduate Degree in Music composition at Goldsmiths University London in July 2014. Ruby has been teaching professionally for 14 years and playing professionally for 16.
As a classically trained violinist and composer she has accumulated experience in peer collaboration, working in large and small groups and developing my work as a private violin tutor to a range of ages and abilities (youngest; 4 years eldest 57). I believe that it is never ‘too late’ to learn an instrument, and I’m passionate about enabling learners of any age reach their potential.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching privately for 16 years, along with putting individuals through grades 1-8 through ABRSM. In addition to this, I taught at ELLSO (East London Late Starters Orchestra) School every Saturday. I also currently am a tutor at ICMP, London.

I've also taught undergraduate students performance skills at Queens University Belfast. I assisted students in groups in developing their own musical voice and helping them manage rehearsals, develop compositional skills and musicality.
I have taught groups of small children (aged 18 months – 3 years) music with Mini Mozart. I have learnt skills in class management and ways of communicating musical ideas through alternative means. This includes lesson planning, timing and interactive techniques to maintain attention and focus.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a person centred approach to teaching, where I focus on the needs of the individual. I do not believe in a 'one size fits all' approach to teaching, as every person has a right to develop and learn at their own pace and that the experience is an enjoyable one!
However, I do place importance on technique as it is the doorway to so many other playing skills and will provide a firm foundation to any pupils future playing.
