Personal Description:

I learnt Western classical piano when I was young, and went on to study it as a part of my BA at the University of Leeds. I complimented this with a study of jazz and popular music outside of school, regularly playing the piano in jazz and pop bands, and taking jazz piano lessons. I also studied percussion, specialising in tuned percussion and playing in a variety of orchestras around London, the UK and in Berlin.

I now work as a gigging musician, playing a wide variety of styles and genres on a selection of instruments. I play piano, synth, bass and percussion in a variety of bands including Noon Garden (psychedelic pop), Los Bravos de la K'umbia (Peruvian cumbia), Orquesta Estelar (Cuban big band) and Paradise Yard Ensemble (an electro acoustic experimental ensemble).

Tutoring Experience:

I am an experienced teacher with a unique approach to my lessons. I have eleven years experience teaching and am used to teaching all ages and levels.

I regularly teach piano to students of all ages, and am used to the wide variety of learning styles and needs each individual student has. I am used to responding to the individual student's desires in planning fun, educational and engaging lessons. I enjoy getting to know my students and tailoring the lessons around their aims and goals on the instrument.

I have just completed an MA in Music in Development at SOAS, where I focused on Cuban music and learnt Cuban piano as a part of my degree.

Prior to that I graduated with a first class honours BA in English and Music from the University of Leeds, and have a ATCL Level 4 Diploma (distinction) in Piano Performance from Trinity College London. I also hold Grade 8 Piano (distinction), Grade 8 orchestral Percussion (distinction) and Grade 5 Music Theory (distinction).

Tutoring Approach:

I strive to provide fun, interactive and engaging lessons tailored to the student's ability and desires. As a student myself, I am fully aware of the benefits, encouragement and inspiration that a tutor can provide. I am happy to teach classical, and jazz at a basic level, and also willing to provide guidance through the grade systems (ABRSM and Trinity) or school-based qualifications (GCSE or A Level music).
